The Beginning of Atagawa Onsen ──
Warlord Ota Dokan and the “Miraculous Hot Spring”
Atagawa Onsen is said to have been discovered by Ota Dokan, the warlord who built Edo Castle.
The origin of Atagawa Onsen dates back to when he found steam rising thickly from the ground in a field
and named it “Atagawa” (Hot River).
Later, in 1931, the excavation of a self-gushing source was successful,
and it reached its peak during the group travel boom in the post-war high economic growth period.
Even today, it boasts the highest number of towers per site area in Japan with 13 towers,
and continues to heal the bodies and minds of travelers as a “Showa Hot Spring Town”
utilizing its abundant water volume.
